We met Albir Rojas at the 4th Warsaw Kizomba Festival, where we were teaching, and we keep crossing our paths in several festivals, so we took a little time, at the AfroLatin Festival in Egypt, to share with you some of his beginnings and stories. Albir Rojas, originally from Panama, started dancing in the streets of Panama, doing Hip Hop. He studied some ballet, jazz to get more technique, and started teaching Hip Hop in Panama also.
Albir Rojas came to Madrid (Spain) to study in 2001, film making and sound technician. He started after one year to go to Latin clubs and learned Salsa Cubana, Bachata…And started teaching Hip Hop and eventually, Latin dances and ballroom dancing. After a few years, around the ending of 2004, in one of his classes, one student from Lisbon, asked him if he new Kizomba, Albir didnt at the time, so he brought him Kizomba music and Albir instantly felt in love with it! The first song he heard was from Kaysha!
Albir looked in the internet for Kizomba, but at the time there was not much on youtube!! He found a videos of Kwenda, Ze Barbosa and Tomas Keita. He discovered that they lived in Lisbon, so he decided to visit Lisbon to start learning Kizomba. Abir learned from Kwenda, Ze Barbosa, Petchu, Helio and Afro Latin Connection. He went back and forth between Lisbon and Madrid, and in 2006 he started his first Kizomba class. From that moment on, he worked hard to spread Kizomba in Madrid, with classes and parties and never gave up!
In Albir’s own words: “Once you get into Kizomba, you can’t get out!” 🙂
Kizomba is Albir’s favorite couple dance, but for solo dancing, his love goes to Hip Hop. And you can see a little flavor of it in his social dancing and more of it, in his performances, with his unique fusions!
Listen to all the interview, to get to know a little more about Albir and Kizomba, and don’t miss a chance to take his classes, to watch his performances or to dance with him….if you are a lady!
