What is Rueda de Bachata or Bachata Rueda??
Rueda de Bachata or Bachata Rueda is a way to dance Bachata that is spreading all over the world very quickly!! It has the same concept as Rueda de Casino, but with Bachata steps and music. Rueda is a spanish word for wheel. Casino is how the Cubans call Salsa. The couples dance in a circle, and there is a caller that is calling the steps. There is a basic step that is going in and out of the circle and then doing something that is called brinquito, which is a hop. This gives the Rueda lots of possibilities. Every move has a name and when the caller is not calling any move, all the couples default to the basic step.
When did Rueda de Bachata start??
Rueda de Bachata was created in Boston by Seemore Johnson and Cristina Pujol ( Hips On Fire) in 2003, when they were choreographing a piece. They were asked to prepare a Bachata dance for the Dominican Independence celebration in Boston, and they decided to explain the steps to the rest of the dance team in a circle, and Voila! Rueda de Bachata was born. So it did actually not come from Rueda de Casino, as some may think. The first performance was for the Boston Housing authority, followed by Boston Salsa congress in 2003, Boston International Salsa Congress 2004, Miami Salsa Rueda Congress of the Americas 2004-2009 and numerous other performances in New England (USA) and around the world.
How many moves are there??
We have so far over 100 moves…and the number keeps increasing. Now this dance has spread to other cities of the US (Austin, Miami) and the world and is still growing. Check our Rueda de Bachata DVDs in our store.
Should we called it Rueda de Bachata or Bachata Rueda??
Well, same question goes for should we call it Rueda de Casino or Casino Rueda?? Spanish speakers will say Rueda de Bachata and non spanish speakers seem to use Bachata Rueda. We call it: Rueda de Bachata.
Are the moves and/or names equal to Rueda de Casino ??
Good question!. Bachata and Casino/Salsa are different rhythms and have different ways of being danced. We try to keep Rueda de Bachata as close as possible to authentic Bachata, and create new moves keeping the essence of Bachata. We do not translate Rueda de Casino moves into Rueda de Bachata moves, and use same names, although coincidences can and will happen.
